Holistic Approach to mental health
The term holistic is very popular in the world of wellness right now, and it’s for a good reason. What does this term actually mean though? The dictionary definition of the word holistic is:
“characterized by the belief that the parts of something are interconnected and can be explained only by reference to the whole.”
I like to think about this from the standpoint of our physical body. If you throw out your back do you just focus on healing that specific area of the body? Probably not. The entire body is interconnected and often times back pain stems from tight glutes, hamstrings, and hip flexors. It is necessary to focus on healing not only the specific area of pain but the interconnected parts of the body that are contributing to the overall pain as well.
When it comes to a holistic approach to mental health you can probably assume what this means. From a medical standpoint the definition of holistic is as follows:
“characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of an illness.”
This is why I take a holisitc approach to treatment with my clients. More often than not clients seek out therapeutic support for a certain reason, and we end up treating something completely different than what they came in for. Everything in our lives are truly interconnected, and we can not address one issue without addressing the entirety of the person. We will focus on your whole life, not just the stressor that brought you through the door. This means discussing your mental and emotional wellbeing, and also your physical and spiritual wellbeing.
Through this approach to treatment, you will see vast improvements in your life much quicker than other approaches to treatment. It may take us a little longer, but you will find a sustained improvement in quality of life. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or would like to book a free consultation session.
